Originally known as the Place Royale, the Place des Vosges was built by Henri IV from 1605 to 1612. A true square (140 m × 140 m), it embodied one of the first European programs of royal city planning ( Plaza Mayor in Madrid, begun in 1590, precedes it).

The square is set up on the site of three alluvial islets: the islet of Passeur-aux-Vaches (or "Île aux Bœufs"), the Île du Patriarche (also called "islet of Gourdaine" ), and the Jewish Island. It was on the latter that Jacques de Molay, Grand Master of the Templars, was burned on 11 March 1314.

A wonderful public outdoor space to get away from the crowds. It is off the beaten path, and surrounded by some amazing architecture. If you have a mind for shopping, a cafe or a bite to eat, it is surrounded by some pricey shops that will accommodate your wishes. A statue of Louis XIII was erected in the square, then destroyed in 1792 after the fall of the monarchy ; it was replaced by an octagonal fountain. It took until the early nineteenth century for the royal equestrian statues as well as that of Louis XIII, destroyed during the Revolution, to once again be rebuilt.
